Episode 4: Autrefois: The "before" of the grieving process

In this episode, I discuss the details about my daughter's death and how it changed my life. I address mental health issues that occur when grieving and how we can be kinder to ourselves and others.

This episode is part one of 2 dedicated to discussing my daughter Abi’s death. I start with a quote from Taraji P. Henson (on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert) about how we find our strength in facing our vulnerabilities.

I also talk about an episode of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ podcast Wiser than Me where she interviews Dame Julie Andrews and they discuss how endings and grief can create new opportunities for us to redefine our lives. Have you listened to her podcast yet? If not, you should!

But I spend most of the episode talking about the day Abi died and some of the struggles my husband and I faced afterward. I suggest the book by McCracken & Semel (1998) titled A Broken Heart Still Beats: After Your Child Dies. I reference passages in the book by Mark Twain and Victor Hugo who both lost children.

Next week, the second part of this series will air. If you’re grieving or you know someone who is, I hope these episodes help.

Sending my love to anybody struggling right now and my wish that you remember to “be Tandy!”
